Section description

It's a route for people who already have their first kayaking experiences behind them, can read the water and deal with obstacles, and above all enjoy it when a trip provides a bit of adrenaline and challenge. For the less experienced, some stretches may require getting out of the kayak and carrying the gear – which also has its charm and gives a sense of closeness to nature.

More of the section description – click to expand

Section I: Kajlandia – the Parchowo landing (about 8 km) – dynamic and technical

This section requires attention from the very start. The river is relatively shallow here, you have to constantly watch the current and avoid the shallows. Experienced paddlers will easily choose the right line, the less skilled may hit a shoal and get out – which is also part of the adventure.

Water mini-drops appear in the current which, at lower water levels, require assessing the situation and a quick reaction – they add dynamism and adrenaline to the trip, but with care they pose no difficulty to people with basic experience. Further on, in a dense forest section, the Słupia becomes more demanding: fallen trees, overhanging branches and tight bends force full concentration and precise manoeuvring. The more experienced will clear many obstacles without leaving the kayak; the less skilled will carry the kayak here and there – which brings the group together and gives the trip an adventurous character.

Section II: Parchowo – the dam in Bylina (about 7 km) – peace and quiet

After the intense start the Słupia suddenly softens. The second section is a completely different face of the river – sprawling bends, a calm current and no major obstacles. The route leads through picturesque valleys, patches of forest, fields and riverside meadows. It's a time for recovery, photos and contemplation of the Słupia Valley landscape.

Finish on Lake Żukowskie – a reward for the effort

The crowning point of the route is Lake Żukowskie – wide, calm and quiet. Unique water fauna, no buildings, clean waters and natural banks make the lake delightful and soothing. Leaving it, we still cover a beautifully forested final section to the dam in Bylina, where we end the adventure.

Why choose this section of the Słupia?

  • two faces of one river – a technical, forested start and a calm, restorative finish,
  • water mini-drops, fallen trees and tight bends – plenty of excitement for intermediate paddlers,
  • no permanent portages – you clear obstacles „over the top", „underneath" or with a short portage,
  • a trip through the heart of the Słupia Valley Landscape Park,
  • a calm, „fairy-tale" finish on wild Lake Żukowskie and a forested approach to Bylina.

Useful tips

Is this section for beginners?

It's a route for intermediate paddlers – with mini-drops, fallen trees and a brisk current on the first section. For a first time it's better to choose „My First Time in a Kayak" or „The Gentle Łupawa".

Can you have a bonfire along the way?

Yes, there are two spots: the Parchowo Kayak Landing (past the bridge on the right) and the Kayak Landing on Lake Żukowskie (at the end of the lake, on the right past the buildings).

Can you stop along the way?

You can get out wherever you like – the banks are accessible, there are beautiful meadows and clearings. We only ask that you leave the spot clean and take your rubbish into the kayak – we'll collect it at our base.

Are there shoals and will I have to get into the water?

Depending on the season, rainfall and water level, shallows may appear. It's worth having footwear that lets you get into the water and drag the kayak (especially with two-person kayaks).

Does the river have a strong current?

On the first section the current is brisk and can push you towards a tree. From the bridge in Parchowo the river flows lazily – but even on calm water stay alert when passing obstacles and getting in and out.

Can the section be shortened?

Yes – there is one possible finishing point: the Parchowo Kayak Landing (past the bridge on the right), after the more difficult part of the route. Important: if the trip is to end somewhere other than agreed, the whole group finishes (not individual kayaks) and you need to let us know in advance so we can plan the logistics. We do not pick up groups partially.
